Hi, you all! My bad for not getting on this message board more often than I have. I did get caught up on some of the messages that you all have written. The one thing that I read was about retiring the Jesus Abbey website. Please keep it going for as long as possible. I have always loved going on the website to check out any news and check the message board for any news from people who write in here. I also read that you had a Jesus Abbey online reunion. Sorry that I am about a year late for that, but I do want to share my experience about Jesus Abbey. I came to South Korea in June, 1973 not really knowing who I was and in bad shape emotionally. I was able to come due to my dad being in the Army and stationed at Yongsan Air Base, Seoul, S. Korea and was able to get the family there. After about a month in Korea and going to church with my parents and younger sister, I was getting to know who Jesus was and how to really get to know him. In July, 1973, I finally made up my mind to get saved and start my life over again. And, a month after that, I got baptized in the Holy Spirit! The water baptism came a few months after that. Plus, I got to know some fantastic Christian people as well while I was there. I got in with a great bible study group, met up with a bunch of great Christian people from Youth With A Mission (YWAM), and then found out about Jesus Abbey thru Jane Torrey when she was visiting one of our neighbors at our apartment complex in Seoul. I made 2 trips to JA: one trip was in the fall of 1973, the second trip was during Easter weekend in 1974. I enjoyed both trips alot! At that time, JA was small but was able to accomodate regular residents and people who came to visit. There were Bible studies, singing, talking, eating, fellowshipping, and church services there. On that Easter weekend that I was there, we had a fantastic Easter service there that Father Archer Torrey preached in. Don't remember the message, but it was a good one. Everyone was blessed that day. JA is in those mountains because of the serenity and beautiful area that the Torreys had chosen for that ministry. Since I came back to the states in August, 1974, I have been keeping in contact with the Torreys and JA, and I was getting their newsletters once or twice a year. I still have those old newsletters to this day in a couple of big manila envelopes in a file drawer. Every once in awhile, I'll get them out to read them and marvel at how far JA has come in the nearly 40 years that I last visited there. I cried when Father Archer Torrey died, but I know that he received his great reward in heaven for his hard work for the Lord. I keep Jane Torrey on my prayer list every day praying that her health will stay with her, bless her paintings, and bless her writings. She is one remarkable Christian lady, and Bunny and Yancey are great daughters for helping her out when they can. God bless Ben Torrey for being there now and getting the North Korea ministry started thru the Three Seas and Fourth River projects, and getting the River of Life schools going. I remember that the Torreys were just beginning to get their cattle farm going when I was there, and I am glad that this has kept going and gotten bigger over the years. Jesus Abbey is a huge light on a mountain for people to look up to and go to for spiritual renewal. I am very proud of what the people at JA have accomplished over the last 40+ years!
Well, gonna go for now. Will check back into the MB for any new comments later on.
Love in the Lord,
Chari Mercier :)
