Archer’s father, Reuben Archer Torrey Jr., did not write any books, he was a man of action, but he did write beautiful letters to his mother, uncommon to letters written today. Archer’s sister, Clare wrote a book on the life of their father, R. A. Torrey Jr., called Ambassador to Three Cultures, from those letters. The story is beautifully written, an absolute must read, I couldn’t put it down until I was finished.

"I was captivated by this biography of Reuben Archer Torrey Jr., it reads as easily as a novel, with a delightful wealth of detail which frames a striking portrait of a remarkable missionary who lived through forty of the most momentous years of one of the greatest global enterprises of the last two centuries.

"This book underlines how one man and his wife could, by the grace of God, engage in and make an impression on three of the great cultures of the world; China, Korea and America, but Torrey’s center was never the culture, nor himself, only Christ.

"It is a picture of vivid vignettes and unforgettable stories: the great Yangtze flood of 1918, then famine relief, civil war, appointment as senior liason officer on the staff of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, and near-fatal accident in the Szechuan gorges where he lost his right arm.

"The accident led to his transfer to Korea. There he organized an amputee center which made him known far and wide to disabled survivors as the man who lost his own arm but could make the legless walk and give the armless hands. A Korean newspaper called him ‘an apostle of love for mankind’."

Dr. Samuel Moffett, Princeton Theological Seminary.

Reflecting back thirty-five years, Jesus Abbey is a celebration and a tribute to Jane and Archer’s steadfast faith in the Lord and His Glory. Their commitment to a life of poverty, obeying the Lord’s commands and trusting in His provisions, Jesus has blessed them beyond their expectations and dreams. Trusting in Jesus completely has made their lives "more exciting than anything I could have imagined in all my youthful longings." And they are not done because just around the corner is an exciting project called the Three Seas Center in Taebaek (formerly Hwangji), Korea.

My partner, Brian Chan, who’s dedication made this website a reality and so quickly, as he tired and gave endless hours of his free time to code and program this wonderful site, and I, have enjoyed helping the Torreys use Internet technologies to spread the work God has given them from the remote mountains of Kangwondo to endless reaches of the cyber world.

This is our gift, a tribute to God and his servants, the Torreys, a free website on Jesus Abbey, to serve our spiritual growth, provide uplifting fellowship and to glorify Jesus’ love for His followers. You will see photos of Jesus Abbey, past, present and future. As I said, the Three Seas Center is the latest Jesus Abbey program and you will read about its plans, purpose and view its wonderful architectural designs. We are delighted to present a special exhibit on Jane’s beautiful paintings. The Torrey Library will archive writings of the Torrey families. (If you would like to support the Three Seas Center or help fund Jane’s or Archer’s book publications, please see our Donate page.) We have many photos of the Torrey family and more to come. But the most exciting plan in our website is the discussion forum and message board.

The Discussion Forum will be hosted by Father Archer Torrey and it will serve to discuss concerns over biblical interpretations of the Bible. We will invite celebrated theologians to discourse topics with Archer and perhaps, other ministers, as we laypersons will have a chance to view and learn from their discussions. The Message Board is just that, a message board for comments (and not a bad way to track down friends and alumni either). Because we do not know how to reach you by mail, sign in, participate and get updates from the Jesus Abbey mailer and current events.

Without further adieu, welcome to www.jesusabbey.tv. God Bless you and pass it on, Jesus is the Answer, Jesus is the Way.
